In inglese esistono parole che ti sorridono, ti fanno l'occhiolino e ti dicono: «Fidati, sono come in italiano». E poi ti pugnalano alle spalle. Sono i falsi amici, e riconoscerli è un'arte.
Ecco i più pericolosi.

Actually non vuol dire «attualmente». Vuol dire «in realtà». Se dici «Actually I'm studying English» pensando di dire «attualmente studio inglese», l'altro capisce «in realtà studio inglese», come se ti avesse appena beccato a mentire. Per «attualmente» si dice currently.
Eventually non è «eventualmente». È «alla fine, prima o poi». «Eventually I passed the exam»: alla fine ho passato l'esame. Per «eventualmente» si usa possibly o if necessary.
Parents non sono i parenti. Sono i genitori. I parenti si chiamano relatives. Dire «I invited all my parents to the party» significa che hai invitato solo mamma e papà.

Library non è la libreria: è la biblioteca. Il negozio dove compri libri è la bookshop (o bookstore in America).
Sympathetic non vuol dire «simpatico». Vuol dire «comprensivo, che mostra compassione». Il tuo amico simpatico è nice o funny.
Pretend non è «pretendere». Vuol dire «fingere». «He pretends to be sick» = finge di essere malato. Per «pretendere» si dice to demand.
Argument non è l'«argomento»: è la lite. «We had an argument» = abbiamo litigato. L'argomento di una discussione è topic o subject.
Sensible non è «sensibile»: è «ragionevole». Una persona sensibile è sensitive.
Come non farsi fregare? Non fidarti mai al primo sguardo: se una parola inglese sembra perfetta, controlla. Fatti un quaderno dei falsi amici: ogni volta che ne scopri uno, scrivilo con una frase. Il cervello ricorda meglio le figuracce.
In English, some words look like Italian words. They smile at you. They say, "Trust me, I'm the same as in Italian!" And then they betray you. These words are called false friends.
Here are the most dangerous ones.

Actually does not mean "attualmente". It means "in fact, really". For "attualmente", say currently.
Eventually does not mean "eventualmente". It means "in the end". "Eventually I passed the exam" = In the end, I passed the exam.
Parents are not "parenti". They are your mother and father. Your "parenti" are relatives.

Library is not a bookshop. It is a place where you borrow books. A bookshop is where you buy books.
Sympathetic does not mean "simpatico". It means understanding and kind when someone is sad. A "simpatico" person is nice or funny.
Pretend does not mean "pretendere". It means "to act as if something is true when it is not". For "pretendere", say to demand.
Argument is not an "argomento". It is a fight with words. The "argomento" of a talk is the topic.
Sensible is not "sensibile". It means "reasonable, full of common sense". A "sensibile" person is sensitive.
How can you avoid these traps? Do not trust a word too quickly. Keep a notebook of false friends and write a sentence for each one. Your brain remembers embarrassing mistakes very well!
