Apri TikTok e senti: «That's so good, no cap». Apri YouTube e leggi nei commenti: «Bet.» Un amico ti scrive: «You ate that. Slay.» E tu, laureato in inglese scolastico, pensi: «Ma io la lingua che ho studiato dov'è?»
Tranquillo. Lo slang esiste per essere capito da chi ci sta dentro, e cambia in fretta. Vediamo le espressioni più diffuse.

Cap / No cap. Cap significa «bugia, esagerazione». That's cap = «Stai mentendo». No cap = «non scherzo, dico sul serio». Esempio: «This pizza is the best I've ever had, no cap.» = Questa è la pizza migliore che abbia mai mangiato, senza scherzi.
Bet. Significa «ok, va bene, ci sto». «Meet at 6?» «Bet.» = «Ci vediamo alle 6?» «Ci sto.»
Slay. Prima voleva dire «uccidere», oggi vuol dire «spaccare, fare qualcosa in modo eccezionale». «You slayed that presentation!» = Hai spaccato con quella presentazione.

Mid. Significa «mediocre, così così». «That movie was mid.» = Quel film era nella media, niente di che.
Vibe. Un'atmosfera, la sensazione che dà un posto o una persona. «This café has a great vibe.»
Lowkey / Highkey. Lowkey = «un po', in modo discreto». Highkey = «tanto, in modo evidente». «I lowkey love this song.» = In realtà questa canzone mi piace parecchio.
Come usarli senza fare figuracce?
- Ascoltali in contesto.
You open TikTok and hear: "That's so good, no cap." You open YouTube and read in the comments: "Bet." A friend writes to you: "You ate that. Slay." And you think: "Where is the English I studied at school?"
Don't worry. Slang is made for people inside a group, and it changes fast. Let's look at the most common expressions.

Cap / No cap. Cap means a lie or an exaggeration. That's cap = You're lying. No cap = I'm not joking, I'm serious. Example: "This pizza is the best I've ever had, no cap."
Bet. It means "OK, sure, I agree". "Meet at 6?" "Bet."
Slay. Before, it meant "to kill." Today it means to do something in an excellent way. "You slayed that presentation!"

Mid. It means average, not special. "That movie was mid."
Vibe. The atmosphere, the feeling that a place or person gives. "This café has a great vibe."
Lowkey / Highkey. Lowkey = a little, quietly. Highkey = a lot, openly. "I lowkey love this song."
How can you use them without embarrassment?
- Listen to them in context. Slang is understood through tone, not only translation.
- Don't force it. If it doesn't feel natural, don't use it. Bad slang is more embarrassing than no slang.
- Remember it gets old. What is cool today can be "cringe" next year. Understanding it matters more than using it.
Slang is not "wrong" English. It is living English. Knowing it is the first step to feeling at home in the real language.
