Invece di dire *”John broke the window”*, diciamo *”It was John who broke the window”*. ๐
| Frase Standard | It-Cleft (Frase Scissa) |
|---|---|
| Mark stole the car. | It was Mark who/that stole the car. (ร stato Mark a rubare…) |
| I met him in Paris. | It was in Paris that I met him. (ร a Parigi che l’ho incontrato) |
Wh-Clefts / Pseudo-Clefts (Usare “What”)
Le pseudo-clefts usano solitamente un pronome interrogativo come *”What”* all’inizio per mettere in risalto un’azione o un oggetto desiderato.
- Standard: I need a vacation.
- Wh-Cleft: What I need is a vacation. (Quello di cui ho bisogno รจ una vacanza)
- Standard: He ruined my project.
- Wh-Cleft: What he did was (to) ruin my project.
All-Clefts (Concentrarsi su un’unica azione)
Usano la parola *”All”* (tutto ciรฒ che / l’unica cosa che) seguita da una clausola con *What* o direttamente dal verbo “to be”.
- All I want is a little peace and quiet.
- All she did was smile at me.
Come costruirle
|---|---|---|
| It-Cleft (Soggetto) | It + is/was + [Elemento chiave] + who/that + [Resto della frase] | It was Anna who called. |
| It-Cleft (Tempo/Luogo) | It + is/was + [Luogo/Tempo] + that + [Resto della frase] | It was yesterday that we arrived. |
| Wh-Cleft (Oggetto/Azione) | What + [Soggetto] + [Verbo] + is/was + [Elemento evidenziato] | What I like most is music. |
| All-Cleft (Enfasi restrittiva) | All + [Soggetto] + [Verbo] + is/was + [Azione/Oggetto] | All I need is time. |
Errori comuni da evitare
| Errore C1/C2 โ | Corretto โ |
|---|---|
| What I need it’s a good rest. | What I need is a good rest. (Il verbo principale dopo la clausola con What deve essere ‘is/was’!) |
| It is you who makes me happy. | It is you who make me happy. (Il verbo concorda con il pronome precedente: it is you who make…) |
| All what I want is peace. | All that I want / All I want… (Non si usa ‘all what’ in inglese standard!) |
