Ellipsis & Substitution (C1/C2)

๐ŸŽฏ

Consiste nel tralasciare parole che sono giร  state menzionate o che sono perfettamente chiare dal contesto (spesso dopo congiunzioni come *and, but, or* o nei comparativi).

Frase estesa (Ripetitiva) Frase con Ellipsis (Nativa)
John wanted to join the team, but he couldn’t join the team. John wanted to join the team, but he couldn’t รธ.
She bought a red dress and her sister bought a blue dress. She bought a red dress and her sister รธ a blue one.

โฑ๏ธ Substitution con “So” e “Not”

Utilizziamo so e not per sostituire un’intera proposizione subordinata dopo verbi di opinione, percezione o speranza (es. *think, hope, expect, suppose, believe, guess, be afraid*).

  • “Will it rain tomorrow?” “I hope so.” (Spero di sรฌ / = I hope it will rain)
  • “Is he resigning?” “I’m afraid not.” (Temo di no / = I’m afraid he is not resigning)
  • “Do you think they will win?” “I expect so.” (Immagino di sรฌ)

๐Ÿ”— Substitution con “Do so” e “One / Ones”

Per evitare di ripetere un intero verbo con i suoi complementi o un nome giร  detto, usiamo specifici sostituti:

  • Do so / Do it / Do that: Sostituiscono un’azione verbale (es. She promised to sign the contract, and she did so immediately.).
  • One / Ones: Sostituiscono un nome numerabile per evitare la ripetizione (es. I don’t like this laptop; I prefer the other one.).

๐Ÿ” Infinitival Substitution (To)

Dopo verbi che reggono l’infinito (es. *want, would like, intend, try, refuse, be allowed*), possiamo mantenere il solo particella **”to”** omettendo il resto del verbo se รจ giร  noto.

  • “Would you like to come with us?” “I’d love to.” (Mi piacerebbe / = I’d love to come)
  • He wanted to leave early, but he wasn’t allowed to. (Non gli รจ stato permesso di farlo)

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ Come costruirle

Per applicare correttamente ellissi e sostituzione in contesti formali e quotidiani, segui questi criteri strutturali:

Categoria Regola di Formazione Esempio Chiave
Risposte brevi con So/Not Verbo d’opinione + so (affermativo) o not (negativo). “Are you ready?” “I think so.”
Sostituzione di nomi Sostituisci il sostantivo singolare con one (e plurale con ones). I need a pen. Do you have a spare one?
Sostituzione verbale Usa do so per riprendere un’azione complessa appena descritta. They agreed to cooperate and did so.
Infinito ellittico Mantieni la particella to dopo verbi modali/infiniti troncati. She wanted to resign, but decided not to.
