Subjunctive & Emphatic ‘Do’ (C1/C2)

🎯 Lesson goal (C1/C2)

The English Subjunctive is a formal verb form used to express suggestions, requests or urgent needs, as well as unreal situations. The Emphatic ‘Do’ is an important way to add emphasis and conviction to a statement. Mastering both instantly lifts your written and spoken English. 🚀

🌟 Present & Past Subjunctive

The English subjunctive has very few special forms. There are mainly two types:

  • Present Subjunctive: Used after verbs of request, suggestion or command (*suggest, demand, insist, recommend*). The form is the same as the base form (no ‘s’ for he/she/it).
I suggest that he arrive on time. (Not *arrives*!)
  • Past Subjunctive: Used with *I wish*, *If only* or *as if* for unreal situations in the present. We use “were” for all persons.
I wish I were better at math.

⏱️ Emphatic ‘Do’

We use the auxiliary *do/does/did* before the main verb in a positive sentence to stress that the statement is true, to correct a wrong idea or to show strong feeling.

  • “You don’t care about my work.” “I do care about your work!” (I really do care!)
  • I did appreciate your help last week. (I really appreciated it!)

🛠️ How to form them

Follow these formulas to use the subjunctive and the emphasis correctly:
