Who is responsible
The data controller is Francesco Pella, an English teacher, who runs this site personally and not for profit. For any privacy question, write to: francesco.pella2@gmail.com.
In short
You do not register on this site: there are no accounts, passwords or profiles. The site is free, has no advertising, and does not sell or share your data with anyone.
Your progress
Completed lessons, your route through the galaxy and your preferences are saved only in your browser’s memory, on your own device. They are not sent to me or to anyone else. You can delete them at any time by clearing the site’s data in your browser settings.
The microphone
Some activities (Speaking Score and the conversations) ask you to use the microphone. The microphone only turns on if you allow it, and you can withdraw the permission at any time in your browser settings.
I do not do the speech recognition: your browser does. In Chrome-based browsers the audio is sent to the browser maker’s servers (Google) to be transcribed, including outside the European Union. That step is covered by the browser maker’s own privacy policy.
I receive only the transcribed text. I use it on the spot to work out your score, and I keep no recording and no transcript.
Legal basis: your consent, which you give by allowing the microphone and can withdraw whenever you like.
Comments
If you leave a comment under a lesson, I record the name you choose, your email address (never shown), your website if you give one, the text of the comment, the date and your IP address. Your name and comment are visible to everyone. The IP address is used only to protect the site from spam and abuse. You can also comment with a nickname.
Legal basis: your consent, which you give by submitting the comment.
Retention: comments stay published until you ask me to delete them or until I remove them.
If you are under 14, you need a parent’s permission to leave a comment.
Visit statistics
To find out how many people visit the site and which pages are most useful, I use Burst Statistics, a tool that runs on the site itself and does not send data to third parties. The numbers are collected in aggregate form: they are not used to identify you, they do not build profiles and they are not used for advertising. Burst uses one statistics cookie (burst_uid), described in the cookie policy.
Legal basis: legitimate interest in understanding how the site is used so that I can improve it.
If you write to me
If you send me an email, I use your address and the content of your message only to reply, and I keep them for as long as needed to do so.
The server and technical logs
The site is hosted on a server run by a hosting provider, which processes data only to keep the site running. Like every website, the server automatically records some technical data about each visit (IP address, date and time, page requested, browser type). It is used only for the operation and security of the site, and is deleted periodically.
Who receives the data
Nobody, for commercial purposes. The hosting provider that runs the server, and, for speech recognition, your browser’s maker (as explained above), may access data only as far as their technical task requires.
No automated decisions
No data is used to make automated decisions about you or to profile you.
Your rights
At any time you can ask to see the data held about you, correct it, delete it, restrict its use, receive a copy, or object to its use. You can also withdraw a consent you have given: the withdrawal applies from that moment on. To do any of this, write to francesco.pella2@gmail.com, and I will reply within 30 days.
If you think your data is being handled improperly, you can lodge a complaint with your data protection authority. In Italy, where the site is run, this is the Garante per la protezione dei dati personali (garanteprivacy.it).
Children
The site is also designed for students under 18, which is why it asks for no registration and collects as little as possible. In Italy, anyone aged 14 or over can give consent to online services on their own; below that age a parent’s consent is needed. Parents and teachers can write to me about anything, including the deletion of a comment.
Changes
If this policy changes, the updated version will be published on this page, with the date below.
