Some, Any and No (Indefinite Quantities)
📌 Lesson Contents
🎯 Lesson goal
In this lesson you will learn to use some, any and no 📖 to talk about quantities that are not exact. You will see when to use them 🧠, in which sentences ✍️, and you can practise for real with the test at the bottom of the page! 🚀
🌟 What do “some”, “any” and “no” mean?
- Some ➔ a few, a bit of ➡️ a positive amount ✅
- Any ➔ one or more, even a little ➡️ neutral or negative amount ❓❌
- No ➔ not one, not any ➡️ zero 🚫
🔎 Watch out!
When you use some, you expect that something is there: the speaker takes it for granted. When you use any, you are not sure it is there – or you already know it is not. It is the word for questions and negatives.
Example:
✅ Can I have some water? ➔ (I know there is some.)
❓ Do you have any water? ➔ (I don’t know if there is any.)
🔍 How do we use them?
| Word | Where we use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Some | positive sentences, offers/requests | I have some friends. 🧑🤝🧑 |
| Any | negative sentences and questions | Do you have any brothers? 👦❓ |
| No | positive sentences with a negative meaning | I have no money. 💸🚫 |
📌 Practical examples
SOME (a few, a bit of)
✅ We use it:
- In positive sentences: We have some cookies. 🍪
- In polite offers or requests: Would you like some tea? ☕
👉 Remember: when you say “some”, you take it for granted that something is already there (even if only in your mind).
ANY (one or more, even a little)
✅ We use it:
- In questions: Do you have any siblings? 🧒❓
- In negative sentences: I don’t have any homework today. 📚❌
👉 With “any”, you don’t know if the thing exists, or you clearly say it doesn’t. It is neutral or negative.
NO (not any, zero)
✅ We use it to say that something is missing, directly in a positive-form sentence.
- There is no milk in the fridge. 🥛🚫
- He has no friends here. 🧍♂️🚫
🧩 Summary table – Some, Any, No
| Word | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Some | positive sentences, requests/offers | She has some books. 📚 |
| Any | questions and negative sentences | Are there any apples? 🍎❓ |
| No | positive sentences with a negative meaning | He has no idea. 🤷♂️ |
❓ Basic doubts cleared up
- Can I use “some” in a question?
➔ Only if you offer or ask for something politely (e.g. Would you like some water? / Could I have some water, please?). - Can I use “any” in a positive sentence?
➔ Yes, but only with the meaning “it doesn’t matter which” (e.g. You can choose any book you like.). Otherwise it is only used in negative sentences and questions. - Do I need a negative verb with “no”?
➔ No! “No” already makes the sentence negative, so the verb stays positive.
🚫 Common mistakes to avoid
| Mistake ❌ | Correct ✅ |
|---|---|
| I don’t have no money. | I don’t have any money. / I have no money. |
| Do you have some pens? | Do you have any pens? (normal question) |
| She doesn’t have some homework. | She doesn’t have any homework. |
👉 Remember: Some ➔ positive or polite | Any ➔ question or negative | No ➔ direct negative
