🌟 What are Past Simple and Past Continuous for?

  • Past Simple ➔ for finished actions in the past. ✅
  • Past Continuous ➔ for actions that were in progress at a specific moment in the past. ⏳

🔍 How do we make them?

1. Past Simple

Formula: Subject + past form of the verb (regular verbs: +ed; irregular verbs: 2nd column)

  • I visited Rome last year. 🏛️
  • She ate pizza yesterday. 🍕

2. Past Continuous

Formula: Subject + was/were + base verb + -ing

  • I was studying at 9 p.m. 📚
  • They were playing football when it started to rain. ⚽☔

🧩 Summary table – Past Simple vs Past Continuous

TenseMain useExample
Past SimpleShort, finished, definite actionsI watched a movie yesterday. 🎬
Past ContinuousLong actions in progress, or background actionsI was watching a movie at 8 p.m. 🎥

❓ When do we use them together?

We often use these two tenses in the same sentence. A long action is interrupted by a short action:

  • Past Continuous ➔ the long action in progress (often after WHILE).
  • Past Simple ➔ the short action that interrupts (often after WHEN).

Formula: While I was doing X (Past Continuous), Y happened (Past Simple).

📌 Examples:

  • I was reading when the phone rang. ☎️
  • She was cooking when he arrived. 🍳

❓ Basic questions answered

  • Do I use Past Simple if the action is completely finished?
➔ Yes! Always! Use it when the action happened at a definite time and is completely finished.
  • Do I use Past Continuous if the action was in progress at a certain moment?
➔ Yes! Use it to describe the situation or the background action that was happening.
  • Do I always need “when” or “while”?
➔ No, but when (for the short action) and while (for the long action) are very useful clues to connect them!

🚫 Common mistakes to avoid

Mistake ❌Correct ✅
I was play football yesterday.I played football yesterday. (Finished action ➔ Past Simple!)
They played when it rained. They were playing when it rained. (Action in progress ➔ Past Continuous!)
