⚖️ Comparatives (Short and Long Adjectives)
To compare two things, the rule depends on the length of the adjective:
- Short adjectives (1 syllable, or 2 syllables ending in -y): add -er.
➔ tall ➔ taller / big ➔ bigger / happy ➔ happier - Long adjectives (3+ syllables): put more in front.
➔ expensive ➔ more expensive / intelligent ➔ more intelligent
❌ The deadly double mistake: “More bigger” or “More taller”. You can’t use both “more” and “-er” together!
🚫 Than vs That (The sound-alike trap)
When you say “bigger than me”, it is tempting to use “that” or “of”. In English you must always use THAN.
| What you want to say | Correct ✅ | Mistake to avoid ❌ |
|---|---|---|
| Comparing your height and mine | You are taller than me. | You are taller that me / of me. |
| Saying something costs more | This is more expensive than that. | This is more expensive that this. |
🌟 Superlatives (The Very Most)
To say something is “the most…” of all, you need the definite article THE before the superlative.
- Short: The + adjective + -est (the tallest, the biggest).
- Long: The + most + adjective (the most expensive).
⚠️ Fatal slip: “He is tallest in the class”. The article is missing! Say “He is the tallest in the class”.
🤝 Equality: As… as
If two things are equal (“as big as”, “as fast as”), use the fixed structure AS + adjective + AS.
- ✅ He is as tall as his brother.
- ✅ This car is as fast as that one.
