⚖️ Negative Inversion: advanced rhetorical emphasis
In C1 ethical debate, to give a concept a formal, dramatic impact, we put negative or restrictive adverbs (Never, Rarely, Not only) first and invert the order of auxiliary + subject:
- ✅ Never have I witnessed such a profound moral dilemma. (Instead of: *I have never witnessed…*).
- ✅ Not only is corruption destroying trust, but it is also ruining the economy.
🔄 Mixed Conditionals: past and present
At C1 level we go beyond standard conditionals by mixing the timelines:
| Function | Grammar Structure ✅ | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Past affecting the present | If + Past Perfect ➔ Would + base form | If I had saved money, I would be rich now. |
| Present state affecting the past | If + Past Simple ➔ Would have + past participle | If I spoke French, I would have applied for that ethics board. |
🏛️ Ethical vocabulary and moral imperatives
Advanced terms for expressing complex ethical judgements:
- Moral imperative: A moral duty that cannot be avoided.
- Inherent conflict: A built-in, unavoidable conflict.
- To weigh the consequences: to think carefully about the long-term ethical results.
- The greater good: The higher benefit for the whole community.
