🌟 What are articles?
Articles are small words that go before a noun (a person, animal or thing). They show whether the listener already knows or does not know what we are talking about.
- THE ➔ the definite article (something specific or unique).
- A / AN ➔ the indefinite articles (something general or not specific).
🔍 When to use “THE”
We use the when we talk about something specific that the listener already knows, or something that is unique in the world.
- The sun is bright. (Only one of them) ☀️
- The book is on the table. (A specific book) 📖
- I have a dog. The dog is black. (Already mentioned) 🐶
Main uses: unique things (the sun, the moon), things we have already talked about, and known or specific places (the bank, the hospital).
🔍 When to use “A” and “AN”
We use a and an to talk about something general, not specific, or something we are mentioning for the first time.
🟢 “A” (consonant sound)
We use it before words that start with a consonant sound.
- I have a cat. 🐱
- She is a doctor. 🩺
- He needs a car. 🚗
🟠 “AN” (vowel sound)
We use it before words that start with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).
- I see an apple. 🍎
- She is an engineer. 🏗️
- He wants an orange. 🍊
🧩 Summary table
| Article | When to use it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| THE | When you talk about something specific or already known. | The sun is hot. ☀️ |
| A | Before words with a consonant sound. | A cat, a house, a book. 🏠 |
| AN | Before words with a vowel sound. | An apple, an hour, an umbrella. ☂️ |
❓ Common questions and mistakes
🔸 Do we look at the letter or the sound?
✅ THE SOUND! This is the most common mistake.
We say “an hour” because the “h” in hour is silent, so the word starts with a vowel sound. We say “a university” because it starts with the sound “yoo” (like a consonant y).
🔸 Can I use “The” the first time I mention something?
❌ No!
Always use A or AN the first time you introduce something. Then, if you keep talking about the same thing, use THE.
“She goes to a bank. The bank is closed.” 🏦
🚫 Watch out for mistakes!
| Mistake ❌ | Correct ✅ |
|---|---|
| I see a apple. | I see an apple. 🍎 |
| He is an teacher. | He is a teacher. 👨🏫 |
| I see bird. | I see a bird. 🐦 (Singular countable nouns always need an article!) |
