🍽️ Meals: the verb To Have
The most common mistake of all is to say “make breakfast” or “do dinner”. In English we don’t “make” or “do” meals: we have them (to have) or eat them (to eat).
📌 Correct Structures:
- I have breakfast at 8:00.
- I eat lunch with my friends.
- I have dinner at home.
⏰ Times and Prepositions of Time
When you talk about your day, you need to say when you do things. The prepositions follow strict rules:
| Use | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Exact time | Usa AT | I wake up at 7:00. |
| Approximate time | Usa AROUND | I go to sleep around midnight. (about midnight) |
| Parts of the day | Usa IN THE | I work in the morning / afternoon / evening. |
| Night exception | Usa AT | I read a book at night. |
🔁 Adverbs of Frequency (Ways to Vary)
You don’t always do things the same way! To make your Speaking richer, you can (and should) use adverbs of frequency. The golden rule: they go before the main verb.
📌 Choose your shade:
- Always (100%): I always take a shower in the morning.
- Usually (about 80%): I usually take a shower… (The most common one for routines.)
- Often (about 60%): I often take a shower…
- Sometimes (about 30%): I sometimes take a shower…
💡 Tip: In the speaking exercise, when you see “I usually…”, feel free to use “always” or “sometimes” if they fit your life better. The simulator accepts them all as correct!
🚫 Common Mistakes (the classic traps)
