Subjunctive & Unreal Past (C1/C2)
📌 Lesson contents
🎯 Lesson goal (C1/C2)
Many languages use a special subjunctive form to express wishes or opinions. In English, the true subjunctive is rare and formal. In everyday speech we use the Unreal Past instead: a past tense form that talks about something that is not real now. In this lesson you will master both structures! 🚀
🌠 I wish / If only (Regrets and Annoyances)
I wish and If only follow strict tense rules, very similar to the Conditionals.
| What you want to express | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Wish about the PRESENT (different reality now) | + Past Simple | I wish I spoke Japanese. (I don’t speak it, but I’d like to.) |
| Regret about the PAST (things that went wrong) | + Past Perfect | If only I had studied harder! (I didn’t study hard, and I regret it.) |
| Annoyance or complaint (you want someone to change their behaviour) | + Would + Base Verb | I wish you would stop talking! (Please be quiet!) |
💡 Careful: As in the Second Conditional, with the verb *to be* it is better to use were for all persons (e.g. I wish I were taller).
⏰ It’s (high / about) time
We use this to say that something should already have been done (urgency or mild criticism). It means “It is really the right moment for…”.
It is (high/about) time + SUBJECT + PAST SIMPLE
- It’s high time you found a job. (You should already have one!)
- It’s about time we went home. (We should go now.)
*(Note: If there is no subject, use the infinitive: It’s time to go home).*
⚖️ Would rather (‘d rather)
It means “I would prefer”. The rule changes depending on whether the two actions have the same subject or different subjects.
| Subjects | Verb form | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Same subject (I would prefer that I…) | Base verb (without ‘to’) | I’d rather stay home tonight. (I prefer to stay in.) |
| DIFFERENT subjects (Present/Future) (I would prefer that YOU…) | Past Simple | I’d rather you stayed home tonight. (I want you to stay in.) |
| DIFFERENT subjects (Past) (About yesterday/earlier) | Past Perfect | I’d rather you hadn’t told him yesterday. (You told him, and I wish you hadn’t.) |
🏛️ The Formal Subjunctive (Mandative Subjunctive)
At C1/C2 level, in formal, business or legal contexts, after verbs that express an order, request or advice (e.g. demand, insist, suggest, recommend) or adjectives of importance (e.g. essential, crucial, vital), we use the base form of the verb for all persons (no ‘s’ in the 3rd person singular!).
- The boss demanded that he be fired. (Not
isorwas) - It is crucial that she arrive on time. (Not
arrives) - My doctor recommended that I not eat sugar. (Direct negative: *not + base form*)
🛠️ How to form them
To master the Unreal Past and the Formal Subjunctive without mistakes, follow these key patterns:
| Structure | How to build it | Key example |
|---|---|---|
| I wish / If only (Present) | Subject + wish/if only + Subject + Past Simple | I wish I knew the answer. |
| I wish / If only (Past) | Subject + wish/if only + Subject + Past Perfect (had + V3) | If only we had left earlier. |
| It’s high time | It is high time + Subject + Past Simple | It’s time you started working. |
| Would rather (Different subjects) | Subject + would rather + Subject + Past Simple/Perfect | I’d rather you didn’t smoke. |
| Mandative Subjunctive | Formal verb/adjective + that + Subject + Base form (no -s) | He insisted that she be present. |
🚫 Common mistakes to avoid
