📌 Lesson Contents
🎯 Lesson goal
In this lesson you will learn to use subject pronouns 📖 correctly. You will see what they are 🧠, how they stop us repeating names ✍️ and how to avoid the classic mistakes 🚫. At the end, you can test yourself with the quiz at the bottom of the page! 🚀
🌟 What are personal pronouns?
Personal pronouns are little words that we use instead of nouns to talk about people, animals or things 🎯. Instead of repeating the name again and again, we use a pronoun to keep the sentence short.
- Marco is a student. He is 20 years old. ➔ (He = Marco) 👨
- Sara is my sister. She is very smart. ➔ (She = Sara) 👩
- The cat is hungry. It wants food. ➔ (It = the cat) 🐱
📋 Full list (Subject)
| Who or what? | English | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Io | I | I am happy. |
| the person you are talking to (one person) | You | You are nice. |
| Lui | He | He is tall. |
| Lei | She | She is a doctor. |
| a thing or an animal | It | It is a book. |
| Noi | We | We are friends. |
| Voi | You | You are my team. |
| several people or things | They | They are friends. |
🔍 When do we use them?
- To avoid boring repetition 🔄:
Anna is tired. She needs a rest. (We do not repeat “Anna”!) - To talk directly to someone 🗣️:
You are very kind! (We are talking to that person.) - To describe animals, things, weather or ideas 📚:
It is raining. (It is the weather.)
❓ Basic doubts cleared up
- You = one person or many?
You is used for one person AND for many people! The word does not change. The context tells you which one. - When do I use It?
It is for one animal, one thing or one idea (not for people). The dog is small. It is cute. - What if there are many things or animals?
If the animals or things are plural, we use They, exactly like for people! The dogs are big. They are loud.
🚫 Common mistakes to avoid
- ❌ Me am a student. ➔ ✅ I am a student.
(The subject pronoun for yourself is always “I”, never “Me”.) - ❌ She are my sister. ➔ ✅ She is my sister.
(Remember to match the verb “be”: she/he/it take “is”.) - ❌ It are raining. ➔ ✅ It is raining.
(“It” is singular, so it takes “is”.)
